I’m a huge fan of Smartphone photography, so playing around with smartphone lenses is something I was bound to do. I first started with some lower end no name brands that didn’t cost much and as a result didn’t really produce anything great, you would get out of focus shots or really clear centers but very blurry edges. So when Amazon recommended some Aukey Smartphone Lenses to me I thought I would check them out.
When I got them in the mail at first glance I thought for sure I had found some winners. The packaging and build quality on these lenses are top notch, aluminum and glass build makes the lenses feel solid. I was really excited to give them a test run. Unfortunately that’s where my excitement ended, one after another produced sharp centers and blurry edges + vignetting.
Now the fine people at Photography Life took some sample shots using a few of these lenses and got far better results than I did, looking in to it I think it was due to the wider lens on my Nexus 6P. The Nexus 6P has a 26mm lens on it while the iPhone 5 that Photography Life used has a 33mm lens on it. I’m not a 100% but I think having that narrower field of view helps crop out the really blurry corners and vignetting. I would say if you’re thinking of getting any kind of smartphone lens, make sure you don’t have a 26mm angle lens on your smartphone or the final capture won’t come out as great as it should.
Below are the results of the lenses I used plus some photos of the lenses so you can see how bad ass they look, I tested them out twice the first time I thought I was doing something wrong the results were so bad so I went out again and redid them and it seems to be just the combination of these lenses + the Nexus 6P. I will be keeping the lenses in case I get a smartphone with a camera with a narrower field of view in the future but I doubt it. The smartphones coming out today are coming out with dual lenses that cover wide and zoom field of view. However if by some chance my next phone doesn’t have that I hope these lenses will come in handy.
